The Future of University Teaching? 

The future of university teaching? - An international view of the digital revolution in higher education

The university model for higher education has flourished for over 1000 years, with universities as centers of learning and teaching, where scholars and students meet, discuss together and challenge each other to inspire new ideas. As lockdowns hit early this year, this model shattered, shutting universities in a domino-effect, from Asia, through Europe, to the United States. In Germany, university staff entered recording studios, expanded e-learning platforms and started Zoom meetings. But the shift to digitalization in higher education stared well before the current lockdowns. Over the past decade, around the world, digital programs have exploded: the so-called „Blended-Learning“ degree programs are already overtaking traditional programs in popularity for MBAs, we have seen the incredible rise of the Massive Open Online Course and industry training programs have been taking advantage of online certification programs. This talk will explore how higher education has already shifted digitally and the many opportunities these bring to students, universities and industry. But we also need to look at the weaknesses of digital education. The digital model can enhance and expand higher education, but can it replace the university? And how can digital education support industry employee development? Your thoughts and contributions are welcome. 

Bio

Holly Ott ist Professorin für Produktionsmanagement und betriebliche IT-Systeme an der TH Rosenheim, Fakultät für Holztechnik und Bau. Sie hat an der University of Virginia in Elektrotechnik promoviert und war zwölf Jahre lang im Produktions- und Supply Chain Management in den USA, Europa und Asien für Siemens, Motorola, IBM und Infineon tätig. Ihre Tätigkeiten lag in den Bereichen 2D-Prozess Simulation, elektrische und Zuverlässigkeits-Tests für die Volumenproduktion, das Qualitäts- und Lieferkettenmanagement. Seit 2009 lehrt sie in Universitäten in Singapur, USA und Deutschland auf allen Ebenen: Bachelor, Master, Executive, Vollzeit, berufsbegleitend, Dual, Blended. Ab 2014 wurde sie Professorin für Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen an der Hochschule der Bayerischen Wirtschaft berufen. 2015 entwickelte sie für die Technische Universität München eines der weltweit führenden Massive Open Online-Programme der Welt, Lean und Six Sigma: Qualitative Tools für Qualität und Produktivität, mit dem MOOC-Anbieter edX und entwickelte 2017  den Kurs Blended Production and Supply Chain Management für das Online-MBA-Programm der Universität Syracuse.
